Bio

Angela Franks has a doctorate in systematic theology at Boston College and an M.A. in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dallas. Her academic awards include the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for graduate study.

Her humanitarian and feminist vision was decisively shaped by her volunteer work in a Harlem soup kitchen and homeless shelter when she was eighteen years old. Her intimate experience of the world of the poor, especially poor black women, gave rise to an urgent realization that advancing the cause of human dignity requires a synthetic vision, for the oppression of one group opens the doors to the oppression of all. In this light, Angela set out to rethink the history of feminism. Her book, Margaret Sanger's Eugenic Legacy: The Control of Female Fertility (McFarland, 2005), is the fruit of that reflection.

In Sanger, the oppressive ideology of eugenics-which explicitly targets persons with the disabilities and the poor-leads to the actual oppression of women, despite Sanger's emancipatory rhetoric. Margaret Sanger's Eugenic Legacy makes clear how fundamental for Sanger was her mistaken belief that female fertility is a chaotic force that must be controlled and shows the misogynistic results of this ideology. Angela draws on over twenty original manuscript sources, as a well as the best historiography on eugenics and women's history, in order to make the case that Margaret Sanger's ideology of control has and continues to have deleterious effects here and around the world.

Angela is married and is the proud mother of three children. She is an experienced and invigorating speaker who has given dozens of workshops and speeches. Her expertise in eugenics and sexual ethics has been called upon in giving legislative testimony in the context of bioethics, and she has published reviews and articles relevant to this nexus of issues. She is available to speak at educational events.

To Whom It May Concern:

This is an unsolicited letter, most highly recommending Angela Franks as a lecturer and teacher. Angela gave two presentations at the University of Dallas in December of 2004, and both were superb.

Her first presentation was to a group of about 25 graduate and undergraduate students, focusing on systematic theology. Only looking at her notes a couple times, Angela engaged the students in her presentation of the material, and spoke in a highly poised and also very relaxed way--like a veteran teacher. It was obvious that Angela has a excellent grasp of her material.

Her second presentation was to a much larger group (about 150), on the topic of Margaret Sanger and Eugenics. Again, Angela gave a superb presentation, using a prepared talk in such a way that employed spontaneity and truly engaged the audience. Wisely, she kept her presentation to about 40 minutes, so as to use the remaining 50 minutes for discussion. She fielded questions expertly for that whole time, and clearly the audience was profoundly engaged. No doubt Angela has done meticulous research on the topic and her forthcoming book is eagerly anticipated. I would encourage any interested institution to have Angela speak on this topic.

Though this letter focuses primarily on Angela's teaching and speaking abilities, I also know her to be a superb scholar in command of a wide range of theological and philosophical material. I am most happy to offer further comments, and my contact information appears below.

Sincerely,
